Women’s Leadership Development

More women in leadership positions will benefit everybody. Women’s empowerment is important not only because it is the right thing to do, but because it is a proven impact-multiplier for development. Research shows that more equitable societies are far safer and more prosperous. Yet, only 22% of national parliamentary seats worldwide are held by women.

 

How can societies continue to improve socially and economically when we leave behind so much untapped human capital? What are the best tools we have to realize this potential?

 

Wedu believes that when access to education is combined with mentorship, it works together as a powerful leadership development tool and catalyst to enable women to lead change within their communities — locally, nationally, and globally.

Mentorship: A Leadership Development Tool

Mentorship is a powerful leadership development tool. Wedu offers lifelong mentorship to our Rising Stars. This provides them with a mentor who serves as their guide and support, a professional who may be from anywhere in the world, to nurture the development of their leadership skills.

 

Wedu mentors are volunteers who know the value of empowering a young woman. Aside from contributing their time, knowledge and expertise to the development of Rising Stars, mentors are also able to develop their own leadership skills, expand their awareness across cultures and have a tangible impact.

Wedu’s Mentorship Program

Once selected, each Rising Star is carefully matched with a mentor who can guide her personal, professional, and leadership development. To maximize their growth opportunity, Rising Stars and mentors are paired and typically rematched yearly based on the Rising Stars’ growth and development.

 

Wedu’s mentorship program is delivered primarily virtually. As such, we are fortunate to have mentors from around the world who are committed to the success of our Rising Stars. Mentors come from a range of sectors and levels of work experience, but share one common characteristic: a genuine passion for supporting the advancement of high potential women. Through the Mentorship Program’s complementary Learning Objectives, mentors also are able to hone their leadership skills.

The Mentorship Curriculum

Relationship Building

Rising Stars develop a one-on-one mentoring relationship with their mentors, who will not only be their personal guide, but also a friend and source of inspiration and encouragement. Together, they kindle trusting and meaningful relationships throughout the course of the program.

Goal Setting

Rising Stars and mentors set Specific, Measurable, Action-based, Realistic, and Time-bound (SMART) goals to enable Rising Stars to define, articulate, and prepare to achieve their goals of social change in a systematic way.

Leadership Lessons

Through collaboration with our partners, Wedu designs a carefully crafted curriculum of important leadership lessons to kick-start conversations between Rising Stars and mentors. Together, the pairs discuss these lessons and find ways to implement them in their own personal and professional lives.
